Iconic Photo: Photo 15

Eleanor Phelps with her mother Claudia
circa 1922

In the winter of 1922 American Eleanor Phelps went on an around the world tour via the S.S. Laconia, a ship that would later be drafted for battle in World War II. She was one of few people at the time to have taken such a journey and yet at the end of all she'd seen she closed her journal with the following question.

How can one come to a conclusion or express an opinion on the world as I have seen it in 130 days?

To see Eleanor Phelps photographs from her world travels check out the collection via the South Carolina Library online database.
